About The IAHT Architectural Heritage Committee Print E-mail
The IAHT Architectural Heritage Committee joined the ITAFA AMALINDE HERITAGE TRUST as its working sub-committee in April of 2001 in order to strengthen the heritage movement.

The Aims and Objectives of the Architectural Heritage Committee are to :
  • TO PROTECT - threatened buildings
  • TO RECORD - projects
  • TO PROMOTE - 'Friends' of Architectural Heritage, Durban Art Deco Society
  • TO SUPPORT

The Committee consists of 20 members which include architects, architectural graduates and students from universities and technikons, quantity surveyors, restoration contractors and people with specialist knowledge and interest in architectural/historical and cultural heritage, as well as councilors and representatives from other conservation/heritage organizations.

The Committee liaises with Amafa aKwaZulu-Natali (AMAFA), the Ethekwini City Council and the KwaZulu-Natal Institute for Architecture, for the protection of threatened buildings. The committee networks with the City’s Conservation Awards Committee, City Council’s Heritage and Conservation Steering Forum, the Museums’ Department on the Heritage Atlas and the Living Traditions Project, with the Cato Manor Reference group, the Durban Art Deco Society, the Urban Core Extension Areas Planning Project, and with tourism bodies such as Durban Africa and KZN Tourism.

It operates from the offices of the Itafa Amalinde Heritage Heritage Trust at 160 Bulwer Road, Glenwood, Durban. Meetings are held on the first Wednesday of each month. It reports back to the Trust on an annual basis.
