TUESDAYS:  April 21st, April 28th and May 5th for 3 different lectures by Jean Powell on Art Deco

Between the two World Wars a design phenomenon arose in architecture as well as all aspects of applied design: fashion, furniture, lighting, theatre, interiors, jewellery, book design, posters, etc.  With the big advances in the power of steam and petrol engines, came the fascination for speed and travel.  Transatlantic ships such as The Normandie and The Queen Mary (whose interiors were Art Deco), express trains, cars, racing cars and aeroplanes, were all re-designed to give the visual effect of speed.

You are invited to join us on Sunday morning, 16th November 2008 at 162-170 Mahatma Gandhi/Point Road previously the old Point Police Station (1902) and Point Fire Station (1907) to view the renovation of these two buildings for commercial use.  Eehard Huizinga, Project Architect, will discuss the work involved in the renovation of these two buildings which have been converted for commercial use.

Time: 10.00 for 10.30 a.m.

PIETERMARITZBURG: Sunday  -  2nd November 2008

We invite you to bring yourselves, friends, family, lunch / tea and the proverbial sticky buns and come and enjoy a day in Hillside, an area of leafy seclusion adjacent to the Pietermaritzburg Botanical Gardens.

Our host on this tour of five interesting turn-of-the-century houses in Hillside/Hillcrest, Pietermaritzburg, is Brian Spencer who in the past has led us on numerous outings in the midlands.

Directions/Route:  Travel through Pietermaritzburg on Durban Road/Commercial Road as far as Victoria Road.  Turn left into Victoria Road and travel its full length and turn right into Mayor’s Walk.  Proceed until approximately 100 yards before the traffic light immediately before the Botanical Gardens and turn right into Quince Road.

At the end of Quince Road there is a bridge.  Immediately after the bridge turn left into the grounds of Granby House.

VISIT TO “COEDMORE CASTLE” Print E-mail

in the Stainbank Nature Reserve, Sunday morning, 28th September 2008.

Mrs Elizabeth Keith, granddaughter of the founder of ‘Coedmore Castle’, will show us around this magnificent home, which was also the home of the important sculptor, MARY STAINBANK and Robert Brusse will talk to us about its architecture. 

The site on the south bank of the Umhlatuzana River is rich in history, being known as the Ndaba Nkulu during the reign of King Chaka. Dering Stainbank commissioned two Scottish stonemasons to build the ‘castle in 1882.
